Visualizing Peace and Transition Process Trajectories: Enhancing Decision-Making Through...

Authors: Niamh Henry and Tomas Vancisin

Peace and transition processes are formal attempts aimed at bringing political and/or military protagonists of conflict to some sort of mutual agreement. Those involved in this multifaceted area face the challenge of processing vast amounts of complex data that can greatly enhance decision-making in peace and transition processes. The Peace and Conflict Resolution Evidence Platform (PeaceRep) responds to this challenge by developing ‘PeaceTech’ visualization tools, with PeaceTech referring to innovation in the use of digital technologies to support peacebuilding. We develop and design tools that leverage information/visualization design principles to enable critical interpretation and in-depth understanding of complex data. These tools are then used to support policymakers, practitioners, and researchers in making informed decisions. In this paper we describe how open-access, custom-built, and responsive PeaceTech tools critically inform decision-making, and how lessons learned can be applicable to other domains, while highlighting both current and future challenges in the area of visualization to inform peace and conflict resolution.
