Professor Alex de Waal

Professor Alex de Waal is Director of the World Peace Foundation at the Fletcher School, Tufts University, with a world renowned expertise on global famine, pandemics, and the political economy of the Horn of Africa.

Professor de Waal is Research Director for Political Marketplace research within the Conflict and Civicness Research group at LSE and contributes to CPAID research at the Firoz Lalji Centre for Africa. He is one of the foremost experts on Sudan, South Sudan and the Horn of Africa with particular reference to humanitarian crisis and response, conflict, mediation and peacebuilding. He has served with the African Union mediation team on Darfur and as an advisor to the African Union High Level Implementation Panel for Sudan.
