Renewed Fighting Erupts in Gedo, Somalia: PeaceRep Research Sheds Light on Political...
Heavy fighting has broken out in Belet Hawa and Dollow between forces aligned to the Jubbaland administration and those loyal to the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS), following the controversial appointment of Abdirashid ‘Janaan’ as head of intelligence in Gedo. Janaan’s return to power has reignited long-standing political and clan divisions in the region.
Reports indicate casualties, displacement, and the capture of a national intelligence official by Jubbaland forces. The appointment of Janaan—who has a well-documented and controversial past—marks a shift in President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s strategy in Jubbaland, and coincides with preparations for local elections.
A new blog by Nisar Majid, Khalif Abdirahman, and Guhad Adan examines the dynamics of the current conflict, clan divisions, and election-related manoeuvring.
It complements PeaceRep Somalia’s latest report on Gedo, Jubbaland, and the Marehan, which explores identity politics, state fragmentation, and regional reconfigurations.
