Journalism conference examines role of the media in divided societies

On November 8 and 9 2019, the Social Change Initiative in partnership with Conciliation Resources and the Political Settlements Research Programme hosted a conference on the role of the media in deeply divided societies.

The Belfast-based event brought together journalists, peace building practitioners, policy makers, activists, and funders to examine the challenges involved and to consider solutions. More than 25 speakers from Myanmar, the Balkans, Rwanda, Colombia, Kashmir, South Africa, Nepal, Turkey and Northern Ireland considered the role of the media in deeply divided societies, what role social media is playing and how societies should respond, the role of the media in peace agreements around the world, and ways to encourage good practice.

Among the speakers, the PSRP’s Christine Bell and Tim Epple presented new research on the role of the media in peace agreements around the world.
