PSRP joins The Elders in conversation on women in mediation in the Arab world

In October 2020, The Elders and Wilton Park convened a high-level virtual gathering celebrating the 20th anniversary of the UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security. The event brought together experts in mediation, peacebuilding, and national and multinational officials to discuss the role of women in peace process mediation in the Arab world, alongside members of The Elders, Lakhdar Brahimi, Ban Ki-Moon, Graca Machel and Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. Participants shared their collective experience and insight into the power and importance of women’s engagement in mediation, and heard from leaders in the Arab world about the challenges and the opportunities of promoting women’s participation as mediators during the Covid-19 pandemic.

PSRP Director Professor Christine Bell was one of several experts invited to contribute to the discussion and the accompanying report. The full event report summarising the discussions and policy issues is now available in English and Arabic. The Elders have also published a list of recommendations from the event.
