SUMMARY:The Future of Power-Sharing in Iraq: Youth Perspectives
DESCRIPTION:Photo by AHMAD AL-RUBAYE/AFP via Getty Images\nThis event will be a panel discussion exploring the future of power-sharing in Iraq with Iraqi researchers both within Iraq and in the diaspora.\nRegister to attend in person or online\nThis year marks the twentieth anniversary of the adoption of Iraq’s new constitution\, a milestone that coincides with a significant generational shift—nearly 50% of the population has been born since this transformative period. These demographic changes have brought new perspectives\, challenges\, and opportunities to the forefront of political discourse. \nAs part of the PeaceRep Iraq Programme at LSE Middle East Centre\, this event will bring together Iraqi researchers to examine how younger generations perceive the power-sharing system in Iraq. The discussion will address the Iraqi political system’s effectiveness in meeting societal needs and explore the aspirations of a new generation poised to shape Iraq’s political and social future. \nSpeakers: \n\nOula Kadhum – SOAS\nKhogir Mohammed – Middle East Research Institute\nMuhaned Seloom – Doha Institute for Graduate Studies\n\nChair: \n\nKamaran Palani – LSE Middle East Centre\n\n  \nLearn more about the speakers and register to attend: https://www.lse.ac.uk/middle-east-centre/events/2025/future-of-power-sharing-iraq-youth

SUMMARY:Film Screening: Devi
DESCRIPTION:Location: MacLaren Stuart Room\, Old College\, University of Edinburgh Law School \nDate/time:\nThursday 27 February 2025\n17:30 GMT \nRegister to attend on Eventbrite\nJoin PeaceRep\, GENDER.ED\, and the Global Justice Academy for the Scottish premiere of Devi\, a multi-award winning documentary about the life of Devi Khadka. \nAbout this event: \nNepal’s Civil War ended in 2006\, but not for Devi; rebel warrior\, mother and sexual violence survivor. As those in power try to erase rape from the history of war\, Devi has to battle her own demons before she can begin to build a movement to fight for justice. In August 2024 Devi Khadka finally saw Nepal’s government pass a key law on conflict related sexual violence – which Devi puts down in part to the process of making the film and the support of director Subina Shrestha. \nThe film screening will be followed by a Q&A with Devi director Subina Shrestha and Global Justice Academy Director Kasey McCall-Smith at Edinburgh Law School. \nRefreshments will be provided upon arrival. \nhttps://www.devidocumentary.com/ \n“A deeply moving and inspiring film about the long and often complicated road to justice. Devi shows us what it takes to be a human rights defender\, standing up for women’s rights whatever the cost.” \nSherine Tadros – Deputy Director of Advocacy for Amnesty International
