PA-X Database Informs New Research on Youth in Peace Agreements

PeaceRep’s open access PA-X Peace Agreements Database continues to be a valuable resource for those interested in the study and practice of peace processes.

Researchers at the University of Glasgow have utilised the 2,003 peace agreements contained in the PA-X database to produce research that explores the characteristics of peace agreements referencing young people.

Using the text search function of the database, Asli Ozcelik and Daniel Odin Shaw identified 208 peace agreements concluded between 1990 and 2022 that refer to youth, young people, or similar to bring an end to conflicts of inter-state, intra-state, or local nature.

A parallel research report introduces the new Youth in Peace Agreements Dataset (YPAD), which explores the characteristics of peace agreements that refer to youth and offers a thematic analysis of the references to youth in these agreements.

The 208 peace agreements identified by Ozcelik and Shaw represent 12% of all peace agreements concluded between 1990 and 2022. The YPAD categorises these agreements under eight main themes and 53 sub-themes. The authors identify Version 7 of the PA-X Peace Agreement Database as the primary source of data for their research:

In building the dataset of References to Youth in Peace Agreements, 1990-2022 (YPAD), our principal source of data was the PA-X Database. PA-X is an exceptional source as it includes a wide range of peace instruments, including local peace agreements, that cannot be accessed elsewhere, as well as due its temporal coverage up until the end of 2022. PA-X also includes various search functions, including free text search, that allow researchers to tailor the use of the dataset to their research projects easily and effectively.

In addition to the user-friendly PA-X Database, PeaceRep also offers
PA-X Local and PA-X Gender as additional databases, which focus on gender provisions in peace agreements and local peace agreements respectively.
